Before you put stock in the exaggerations and tall tales that you might hear on the Internet or elsewhere about widespread scamming and counterfeiting in China, take some time to read our assessments and advice.
The suppliers who sell through it, though, are another story. How To Buy From Alibaba. What you should take care while ordering from alibaba
While the majority of them are there to do business honestly, there have been some cases of them scamming their customers. Alibaba provides certain trade guarantees and secure payment methods to protect your transactions. It also has protocols to make sure suppliers are legally registered, and allows you to report a seller whom you suspect of fraud. These tools help to keep you safe on Alibaba.
With that said, the platform cannot guarantee the ability legal or otherwise of their suppliers to list certain authentic branded products for sale.
There have also been cases where suppliers have slipped through cracks in the verification process and ended up scamming buyers in various ways. All trading online or otherwise comes with a degree of risk. That means more money changing hands, and more products that have a chance to be counterfeit or otherwise defective.
Buying on more consumer-focused e-commerce portals — such as eBay. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the risks that come with buying in bulk, and weed out the scammers. There are certain products that are especially popular bait for counterfeiters and fraudsters. These include digital media such as DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, video games, and computer softwarecomputer memory storage devices such as USB flash drives and external hard drivesand items from popular Western brands e.
Apple, Nike, Sony, Disney, Marvel, and so on. Almost all of these will be not-as-advertised, if not outright knock-offs.
Even some products supposedly from major Chinese brands may be fake, too. An easy way to avoid dealing with a dishonest seller is to buy only from those who have the Gold Supplier status. This means that they have a paid account on the website, and have verified that they have a registered business, so they have more to lose from being caught scamming. If your intuition tells you that something is off, it may be a better idea to look elsewhere for what you want than forge ahead with a risky deal.
This will tell you that if you buy from this supplier, you get three safety guarantees. And third, if you receive your order and it is significantly different from how it was listed, you can keep it anyway and receive a partial refund. It is also wise to use your credit card or PayPal account as your actual method of payment. PayPal or your credit card company may be able to step in and help you if something goes wrong, as opposed to if you pay with a money order or bank transfer.
This goes somewhat hand-in-hand with our previous tip. They may be trying to hijack your purchase by posing as the seller, then taking your order payment and not sending you anything in return.
Super complicated for English speakers. Alipay sucks Why would Alipay take credit card information and then decline it as international card when it starts with international card on Didi?
Didi is in the same boat.
They have international card option but when you put in the card its declined. How is one supposed to work in this country and build a business relationship with factories when everything is stacked against you doing so. No credit cards, no maps, taxi drivers that want to rip you off all the time and no way to find your way back on your own. China is doing great except making things easier for people who are making things happen for it. If you have a UK number you can't use alipay!
This has caused quite an issue as I can't travel around china and pay for things, without completing registration by verifying my phone number. Although loads of articles say it accepts foreigners and UK people this isn't the case at all!
For online purchases in China it's hard to avoid China's PayPal- alipay. I wouldn't recommend using any of their other saving or banking features - as a foreigner.
Cant use the same functions Chinese people get. Like open a savings account. Different treatment for chinese and non chinese. Racist treatment and withholding of money. Poor customer service. Don't click on the button that says you are a foreigner, just enter your card number and cellphone and you receive an activation code, set your password and you have zhifubao. I figured it out with mediocre Chinese reading skills while on scotch. Handoogies, does that automatically link your card to your zhifubao meaning whenever you purchase sthg, the amount is deducted directly from your card or does it require you to have to top off your zhifubao account via your bank's e-banking platform before you can pay with zhifubao?
Just wondering cuz I was never to pay directly bc everytime I got to the enter card number area, they would ask for an ID number and had no passport option. Creating a Zhifubao account is simple -- linking it to your bank account and going through the verification process is not. You'll automatically get a Zhifubao account when you sign up for Taobao, but you won't be able to do anything with it until you're verified.
You can't even accept money transfers from friends. I'm at Part 3 and I'm having trouble linking my card. The app only allows for cards with numerals while mine has 17 it's a china construction card. Any solutions for this? So you have to use a credit card for this method? There's an option to add a regular bank card on the user profile page of the app lower rightbut even copying and pasting my passport info has letters but no letter input in app I can't get it to behave. I still say that this is incorrect for all the nationalities.
If your country is not on the list of countries that you can choose from the registering list. You cannot register alipay account. I called last month to their customer service and they told me that. Unfortunately I am one of those ppl who cannot. First Thanks for your effort, Second when you click on the blue one you don't get that page, i cannot find a registration page when you can put you Passport number as ID number, I am stuck at the Chinese ID number which I don't have :S.
I completely agree with handoogies, I've been using Alipay for over 2 or 3 years and quickly figured out not to do the "foreigner" option. All you need to know is the ID number you signed up to the bank with, and yes yes for us foreigners this will be your passport number but when i opened my account they added zero's to pad it out, so when i signed up to Alipay and thought the foreigner thing was way too long and ridiculous, i just entered my ID number exactly as my bank had it, with all the zeros added on and hey presto it worked.
It didn't work just on it's own, as my passport number. Then when i pay for stuff it directly comes off my card not my alipay balance. As it stands, i can't use my card for online shopping on it's own as it's one of the crappy ones you get. Unless it's changed, which it doesn't look like it has, it's by far the quickest way to sign up.
Technically, alipay doesn't know i'm a foreigner. Also you can pay for things in convenience stores, buy movie tickets including selecting seats etc and of course lets not forget the hongbao games at Chinese New Year!
Very useful article, thanks a lot! I had an issue with completing the step 1, when I input my bank card number, it is said that this card number is already used no idea why as I've never had an alipay account beforeand apparently, the only way is to use another bank card, if your don't have another bank card, then you will have to go to the bank and ask for one or replace the previous one.
Me again! Audrey, that sounds super dodgy, i'd get on to your bank about that one! If you defo didn't sign up before, it could be the card they gave you had a previous owner and after a period was reactivated and given back out. Also worth mentioning, El Fresh online now accepts Alipay as payment. Just have to navigate their terrible new site layout.
Another option is not to link your bank card but just top up your account through e-banking. Not as convenient but infinitely safer as they don't have your bank account on file. Worst case if your account gets hacked is that you lose your unused balance only.
When checking out, I just do the thing where I select my bank, enter the login info I set at my bank, then a PIN is sent to my phone. Then sit back and relax, let us do the rest!
